The 23-year-old Billiejo Elmer of Gilbert House in Croft Gardens in Heworth has been in touch with the City of York Council about the ongoing damp and black mould problems in her two-bed council flat where she lives with her six-year-old daughter, Lacey-May. She stated that the problem has worsened now that she has another baby on the way and she is struggling to contain the mould. According to Elmer, the mould is everywhere, all over the ceilings and around the windows, to an extent that it affected her daughter’s Christmas presents and bedding. She has been continuously opening windows and wiping it away, but nothing seems to work. Elmer also mentioned that she has invested in a dehumidifier, but the heating in the flats is only provided by little hot air heaters and there’s no central heating, making it difficult to keep the flat warm.
City of York Council said it is unable to comment on individual cases, but they said that mold can be a common issue in many homes involving several factors, and they have invested millions of dollars to address such issues. Elmer has also been in contact with her MP, Rachael Maskell, who emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to tackle the issue of damp and mould in homes, regardless of the cause, and highlighted the importance of implementing the Decent Housing Standard. Overall, Elmer and her MP are seeking proper and expedient support to resolve the issue.
