York library bosses take stand against budget cuts by council

The city’s fifteen libraries will remain open despite the council’s financial difficulties, according to a statement released by Explore York. The council plans to reduce funding for Explore York by £300,000 a year for the next two years as part of efforts to address a £40 million deficit in council finances. However, Explore York has a 15-year contract with the council and is not part of the council’s budget, which means it is not subject to cuts. The organization has pledged to continue delivering library and archive services in partnership with the council. Explore York is an independent mutual organization that operates fifteen libraries in York and employs over 100 people.
