The scandal of the Post Office Vs the Sub-postmasters
In the late 1990s, the Post Office installed the Horizon IT system, which ultimately led to the wrongful prosecution of hundreds of sub-postmasters for theft, fraud, and false accounting. Despite knowing about faults in the system from at least 2010, the Post Office relentlessly pursued individuals between 1999 and 2015, denying any issues with Horizon.
Paula Vennells, who served as the CEO of the Post Office from 2012 to 2019, has faced criticism for her role in the scandal. Following a high court ruling in December 2019, which found the convictions of post office operators to be wrongful and blamed the Horizon IT system, Vennells stepped down from various positions, including at the NHS and the Church of England.
A petition has been launched to remove Vennells’ CBE, which she received for her services to the Post Office and charity in the 2019 New Year Honours. Additionally, the Metropolitan police have confirmed that the Post Office is under criminal investigation for potential fraud offenses related to the scandal.
