SOS Save Our Swan Group Makes Offer to Save White Swan at Thornton le Clay

The White Swan Inn, Pub Saved by Village, Goes on Sale
The White Swan Inn at Thorton-le-Clay has been put on the market for £640,000 following a resident-led campaign to prevent its conversion into a house. The 300-year-old pub closed in March 2020 after its lease expired, and the new owners attempted to change its use to a house due to concerns about the viability of operating a pub. However, Ryedale District Council rejected the application after a successful campaign by hundreds of locals, and the pub was awarded Asset of Community Value status. The current asking price of £640,000 is higher than the £450,000 it sold for in August 2020. The Save our Swan campaign group has made an offer to purchase the pub and has pledged funding for the acquisition. The group is pleased that the property is being marketed as a pub and hopes to find a buyer willing to pay a figure acceptable to the owners. Pub Protection Officer Nick Love urged the owners to engage with the community, while property agents Carter Jonas believe the asking price represents great value for money. David Beattie, Head of York Residential at Carter Jonas, expressed satisfaction with the level of interest in the property and highlighted its commercial potential. He expressed excitement about the prospect of seeing what the new buyers will do with the inn.
