There are a few things that you should do after your ostomy surgery is complete.  Get your post-op instructions from your surgeon. These will include instructions on how to care for your ostomy and when to see them for follow-up care.  Pay close attention to the instructions that were given to you during surgery. This includes changing your ostomy appliance regularly, drinking plenty of fluids, and not smoking or eating spicy foods. Do not hesitate to ask questions if you don’t understand something. Make sure you take good care of your skin around the stoma area. This includes using a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, wearing sunglasses in bright sunlight, and limiting exposure to cold temperatures. Keep a journal of your symptoms, activities, and progress following surgery so that you have a record of what has been going on. This will make it easier for future doctors or therapists to help you recover from ostomy surgery.
