Pete Kilbane expresses discomfort with York strip club licence

Ziggy’s Club 55 in Micklegate had its sex establishment licence renewed by York councillors on January 16. However, City of York Council’s deputy leader Cllr Pete Kilbane expressed discomfort with strip clubs that primarily cater to men. He called for more debate on the topic and suggested that if sex entertainment venues are allowed, they should be more gender-inclusive. Kilbane questioned the need to approve the licence and emphasized the outdated nature of these establishments. The council’s policies could be reviewed in the future, but for now, they have to assess the application based on existing policies. The council’s licensing manager stated that while the local authority has the power to disallow such establishments, the current policy allows for two. Club 55 is the only club in York that offers lap dancing. Cllr Kilbane’s discomfort and call for debate on gender equality in sex establishments.
