Joseph Gilchrist, now 21, has been jailed for eight months after refusing to tell the police the PIN number of a phone linked to a man suspected of supplying Joshua Reeson with drugs. Joshua, 15, died from an Ecstasy overdose, and Gilchrist refused to provide the PIN numbers for two phones linked to the case. The judge stated that Gilchrist’s actions had struck at the heart of justice and that a deterrent sentence was necessary to stop others from acting similarly. Gilchrist had previously been fined for burgling the University of York with intent to cause criminal damage. Despite his guilty plea, he claimed that he did not know the PIN numbers of the phones in question.
