Inquest Commences for Leslie Forbes and Kenneth Patrick Hibbins

Leslie Forbes and Kenneth Patrick Hibbins, also known as Patrick, tragically lost their lives while trying to cross the River Esk near Glaisdale in a Land Rover on December 28, 2023. An inquest into their deaths began today at Northallerton Coroner’s Court. Coroner Jon Heath stated that the men, along with Scott Thomas Daddy, were part of a 4×4 group that was swept away by the river during an off-road expedition. The recovered vehicle was taken from the river by emergency services, and the cause of death for Forbes and Hibbins was determined to be drowning. The hearing was adjourned, and the area was experiencing heavy rain and flooding due to Storm Gerrit at the time. Rosie Dale, a local resident, mentioned that the area is popular with 4×4 drivers.

The family and friends of the deceased men released statements honoring their memories through the North Yorkshire Police. They remembered Mr. Forbes as a loving husband, father, and grandfather, and Mr. Hibbins as someone who will be deeply missed by his friends and colleagues. Mr. Daddy was described as a loving son, brother, uncle, and boyfriend who was known for his helpfulness, passion for outdoor activities, and support of the Hull FC.

The recovered vehicle was removed from the River Esk near Glaisdale, and eyewitnesses described the severity of the flooding and the conditions of the river at the time of the incident. It’s a tragic reminder of the dangers associated with off-road travel, especially in hazardous weather conditions.
