Wayne Mark McCreery targeted a man in his 70s from the Northallerton area from 2015 to 2018. He and Liam Dinsdale claimed to be from a debt collecting agency and pressured the man into paying regular instalments by threatening court action. The conspiracy to defraud continued until October 2018, when North Yorkshire Police were alerted. McCreery, 50, and Dinsdale, 38, were arrested along with others and charged with money laundering. The loss to all victims amounted to £472,896.20.
McCreery was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment, while others involved in money laundering also received sentences. Detective Constable Neil Brodhurst led the investigation and urged people to report any concerns and suspicions to the police. He advised people to verify claims of debt collection and not to allow others to use their bank accounts.
