Controversy erupts over recycling collections in Acomb and Woodthorpe, York

Waste and recycling collection dates changed for Christmas and New Year in parts of York. In Woodthorpe, Foxwood, and Acomb, recycling collection will be suspended for four weeks. Collections scheduled for December 29 will take place on December 30, but only black bins will be emptied, no recycling.

Liberal Democrat councillor Paula Widdowson expressed concerns about staff not getting time off and the impact on recycling collections. Cllr Jenny Kent, City of York Council’s executive member for environment, defended the decision, citing concerns about equal pay claims. She also highlighted the council’s hardworking waste crews and assured residents that missed recycling collections will be collected on the next scheduled collection day. Residents were also encouraged to use household waste recycling centers and local recycling points.

The article also mentioned Birmingham City Council’s financial issues due to equal pay claims, and the City of York Council’s current financial forecast. There is no expectation of issuing a section 114 notice this financial year.
