1st Holgate Scout Group embarks on new building project at Acomb School

1st Holgate Scout Group in York was founded in 1981 and has increased to 350 members since 2009. There is a planning proposal to build a new hut for the group, as the current accommodation is not large enough to meet the demand from local young people. The proposed site for the new hut is located next to Acomb Primary School, with the planning application currently out for consultation.

Neighbours have submitted views to the City of York Council’s online planning portal, with some expressing support for the development but also raising concerns. One resident, Toni Mayner, supports the development but is concerned about potential noise disturbances from events held at the new hut. Another resident, Sarah Beatham, supports the development but hopes that the school will maintain its hedge boundaries and not neglect them.

The Scout group has grown so much that it now operates from four different sites in the local area. The proposed new building would include a main hall, breakout room, stores, office, meeting rooms, multi-function room, kitchen, and toilets. The applicant has stated that careful consideration has been given to the impact of the building and land on neighboring dwellings, with a commitment to a well-conceived landscaping plan and early consideration of a travel plan to reduce the impact on neighboring properties.
